Sitting at my familyâs table, I take a sip of my drink. Cora just finished dancing, having taken the slot right before Poppyâs. I swear it took everything in me not to go up there on stage and toss her over my shoulder. The outfit she wore tonight has to be my favorite thus far. It was a deep emerald green, kinda reminds you of what one of the big stars wouldâve worn back in the 50s.
Iâm still staring at the stage, and my brother Félix joins me. âI see things must be going well between the two of you.â He grins and signals the waitress to bring him a drink.
âWhat are you doing here?â I ask, frowning. I figured heâd be at home with Madelaine.
âDésirée and Madelaine decided to have a girlsâ night pampering each other. Thereâs no way in hell Iâd let them paint my nails like they wanted.â
I canât help but laugh at his remark, because I know if my brother didnât get out of the house, Madelaine wouldâve found a way to get Félix to change his mind.
âCome on, Félix, you know you love the idea of red nail polish.â I snicker, ignoring the glare he sends my way.
âWhatever, asshole. Anyways, I wanted to talk to you. Désirée mentioned Brittney earlier during dinner,â Félix says, smirking as the waitress places his drink in front of him.
âAnything else?â she asks, holding her tray in front of her.
âNo, thank you for asking, though,â I say, sending her off and refocusing on my brotherâs words. âYeah, Brittney showed up at the bookstore earlier after I texted you. She was all over me and got in Désiréeâs face. Brittney had the nerve to make a scene. She wanted to know who the woman was with her husband.â
Félix chuckles, placing his drink on the table. âLet me get this straight, this woman, your wife . . .â
âFor the love of God, donât call her that,â I grunt, interrupting him.
âYouâre married?â At the question, I freeze, knowing whose voice it is.
Shit.
I turn and catch Corentina with wide eyes and a pained expression on her face. She shakes her head slightly in disbelief and takes a step back. âTell me youâre joking,â she asks of me, but I canât lie to her.
âItâs complicated, but I promise Iâll explain everything.â
She scoffs and shuts her eyes the second I finish speaking. I know what sheâs thinking, this is what men who cheat say, but Iâm not in a situation like another would be in. This is quite different, and if she gives me a chance to speak, sheâll understand it soon enough.
Corentina opens her eyes, and I can tell from how glassy they are that sheâs about to cry. Fuck, Iâve disappointed her. I start to open my mouth, but she speaks and her bottom lip wavers. âDonât even,â is the last thing she says before she runs out of Diamond Dancers.
